PDF Form Field Extractor

See what is inside a PDF form and get the answers out. The extractor lists every field – its name, type, current value, available choices, page, tooltip and whether it is required, read-only or multi-line – and exports the data as a spreadsheet, as a compact JSON of values that the PDF Form Filler can load, and as complete field definitions for developers.

PDF Form Field Extractor FAQ

Which forms are supported?

Standard AcroForm fields used by nearly all fillable PDFs. XFA forms store their data differently and are reported as such.

What is in the values JSON?

An object with one entry per field name and its value – text, true/false for check boxes, the selected option for radios and dropdowns, an array for list boxes.

Why are some values empty?

The form has not been filled in yet, or the field’s value is calculated by a script that has not run.

Can I extract many forms at once?

One file at a time; the CSV format makes it easy to combine results afterwards.

Are signatures extracted?

Signature fields are listed, but signature data is not exported.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The form is read in your browser.

The data inside PDF forms

A fillable PDF keeps its fields in an AcroForm: a list of named fields, each with a type, a value and one or more visual widgets on the pages. When someone fills the form, the values are stored in those fields, which makes them extractable as structured data rather than text on a page.

The extractor reads the form with pdf-lib and describes every field: text fields with their content and limits, check boxes as checked or unchecked, radio groups and dropdowns with their selected option and all available options, list boxes with every selected entry. Tooltips, which form authors use as human-readable labels, are shown next to the technical names.

Three downloads serve different purposes. The CSV is for people: one row per field, ready for a spreadsheet. The values JSON is for refilling: paste it into the PDF Form Filler to complete the same form again. The full JSON includes all properties for developers building automated workflows.

Because the tool runs locally, filled forms with personal data never leave your device.
