Markdown to PDF FAQ
Which Markdown features are supported?
Headings, emphasis, links, images, bulleted and numbered lists, tables, block quotes, horizontal rules, inline code and code blocks, following CommonMark with the GitHub table extension. Raw HTML inside the Markdown is sanitised and then converted as well.
What is the difference between Download PDF and Print / Save as PDF?
Download PDF builds the file directly with a generator inside the page: fast and one click, with a fixed, clean style. Print / Save as PDF hands the document to your browser's print function, which supports every language and script and gives you the browser's header, footer and scaling options.
Why are some languages not available for direct download?
The built-in generator embeds a font covering Latin, Greek and Cyrillic. Scripts such as Arabic, Devanagari, Bengali or Chinese need shaping and fonts it does not include, so the tool points you to the print method, which uses the fonts installed on your system.
Are links clickable in the PDF?
Yes. Links in the Markdown remain links in the PDF.
Can I add page numbers or a custom style?
The direct download uses one built-in style without page numbers. With Print / Save as PDF you can switch on the browser's headers and footers, which include page numbers.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The Markdown is converted and the PDF is generated in your browser.
From plain text to a page
Markdown is a comfortable format to write in and an awkward one to hand over. A colleague, a client or a print shop expects a document that looks finished and opens the same way everywhere, which in practice means PDF. Converting bridges the two: you keep writing in plain text and produce a fixed-layout document when it is time to share.
The conversion has two stages. First the Markdown is turned into HTML, the same step a website would perform. Then that HTML is laid out on pages: text is broken into lines of the right width, headings receive space above, tables are measured so that columns fit, and long content flows onto following pages. The result is a PDF containing real text and vector lines, not an image, so the file is small and the text remains searchable.
A few habits make documents convert well. Use a single top-level heading as the title, since it also becomes the file name and document title. Keep tables narrow enough for the page, or switch to landscape orientation for wide ones. Break very long code lines, as code is not wrapped the way prose is. Images referenced by web addresses must be reachable at the time of conversion.
For most notes, proposals and README files, the built-in style is all that is needed. When a document must follow a corporate design, with specific fonts, a letterhead or numbered pages, a word processor or a publishing tool is the better instrument, and the Markdown source can still serve as the draft.
