PDF Page Numbering Tool FAQ
How do I skip the cover?
Set “Start numbering on page” to 2. Use “First number” to decide what the first numbered page shows, for example 1.
What does the “of 12” count?
By default all pages. Untick the option to count only the numbered pages, so a cover does not inflate the total.
What is the outer corner option?
It places numbers bottom right on odd pages and bottom left on even pages, as in printed books.
Can I use non-Latin numbers or text?
The tool uses the standard PDF fonts, which cover Latin characters. Other scripts are not supported.
Does it change the existing content?
No. Numbers are added on top; text and images are untouched.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. It is processed on your device.
Page numbers in PDF documents
Page numbers make long documents usable: readers can refer to a page, reviewers can cite it and printed stacks can be put back in order. Many PDFs are produced without them, from scans, exports or merged files, and adding them afterwards is a common last step.
The format depends on the document. Reports and contracts often use “Page 3 of 12” so readers know nothing is missing. Books and theses use plain numbers, often in Roman numerals for the front matter. The tool lets you start numbering on any page and choose the first number, which handles covers, title pages and tables of contents.
Placement respects how a page is displayed. PDF pages can be rotated or have a crop box that differs from the full page, and the tool calculates the position from the visible page so the number appears upright in the chosen corner.
Numbers are drawn with standard PDF fonts, so the file does not need extra font data. The original content stays unchanged, and everything runs in your browser.
