Video to JPG FAQ
Is this better than taking a screenshot?
Yes. A screenshot captures the player at screen size, often with controls or scaling. Capturing the frame directly gives the full original resolution with nothing on top.
How precise are the frame buttons?
Each step moves about one frame at 30 frames per second. Browsers do not expose a video’s exact frame rate, so for high-frame-rate footage a step may skip or repeat a frame.
Why does my capture look blurry?
Paused video frames from fast motion contain motion blur, and heavily compressed videos lose detail. Try a neighbouring frame or a calmer moment.
What is the difference from Video to PNG?
This tool captures hand-picked moments as JPG. Video to PNG exports a whole range of frames losslessly as an image sequence for editing or animation.
Which formats are supported?
Any video your browser can play, such as MP4, WebM and most MOV files. For other formats, convert to MP4 first.
Getting a great still from video
Video is designed for motion, not stills. Each frame is exposed for a fraction of a second, often long enough to blur fast movement, and compression spends most of its effort on the overall impression rather than fine detail in any single frame. The best stills therefore come from moments where the subject is briefly still, such as the peak of a jump or a pause in speech.
Stepping frame by frame around a moment usually reveals one frame noticeably sharper than its neighbours. Compressed video also alternates between frame types: keyframes are stored completely and are often slightly crisper than the predicted frames around them.
Resolution limits how a still can be used. A 1080p video gives roughly 2-megapixel pictures, ideal for web use and small prints; 4K footage gives about 8 megapixels, enough for an A4 print. For upscaling beyond that, start from the best-quality frame you can find.
Because the capture uses the browser’s own video decoder, it works instantly without downloading a processing engine, and the video never leaves your computer.
