TikTok Video Resizer FAQ

What is the best video size for TikTok?

1080 × 1920 pixels in a 9:16 vertical ratio. TikTok accepts other shapes, but they are shown with bars and take up less of the screen.

Will the blurred background look professional?

It is the most common way to present horizontal footage on vertical platforms. The blurred layer uses the video’s own colours, so it blends in, while the full picture stays sharp in the middle.

Does this work for Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Reels and Shorts use the same 9:16 shape and resolution, so the same file works on all three.

How long does processing take?

It depends on your device and the video length. A one-minute 1080p clip typically takes one to several minutes, because a new video has to be encoded. Keep the tab open until it finishes.

Is the audio kept?

Yes. Audio is kept and converted to AAC. If the original has no sound, the result simply has none.

Making horizontal video work on a vertical platform

TikTok was designed around a phone held upright, so its videos are taller than they are wide. Most cameras, screen recorders and older footage are the opposite. Uploading a landscape video unchanged leaves most of the screen empty, which makes the content feel small and less engaging in a feed of full-screen clips.

Three approaches fill the frame. Cropping keeps the video edge to edge but removes more than half of a 16:9 picture, which suits talking heads and centred action. Bars keep everything but look unfinished. The blurred background, popularised by vertical video apps, places the full picture over an enlarged, blurred copy of itself, so the frame is filled with matching colour and movement.

Resizing to the platform’s exact resolution has another benefit: TikTok processes uploads to its own specification. Supplying a 1080 × 1920 file at 30 frames per second in H.264 avoids an extra conversion step on upload, which can otherwise soften fine detail.

For captions, stickers and on-screen text added in TikTok, remember the app overlays buttons on the right side and the caption at the bottom. Keep important parts of the picture in the centre so they remain visible.
