MP4 to MP3 FAQ
Which bitrate should I choose?
128 kbps is fine for speech. 192 kbps is a good general setting for music. 256–320 kbps is close to transparent for most listeners but produces larger files. A higher bitrate cannot add quality that the video's audio track does not have.
Does converting to MP3 reduce quality?
MP3 is a lossy format, so the audio is re-encoded. At 192 kbps or above the difference from the original is hard to hear.
Why did I get a message that there is no audio?
Some videos, such as screen recordings or silent clips, have no audio track. There is nothing to extract from those files.
Can I convert videos from YouTube or other sites?
This tool converts video files that are already on your device. It does not download videos from websites. Only convert material you own or have permission to use.
Is the video uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser. Large videos are never sent over the internet.
How audio is extracted from a video
A video file is a container that holds separate streams: one or more video tracks, one or more audio tracks and sometimes subtitles. Extracting the audio means ignoring the video stream and writing the audio stream to a file of its own.
In an MP4 the sound is usually stored in AAC format. To produce an MP3, the audio is decoded and encoded again with an MP3 encoder at the bitrate you choose. MP3 is not the most efficient format, but it remains the most widely supported: every phone, car stereo, media player and editing program can play it, which is why it is still the default choice for sharing audio.
Common reasons for extracting audio include turning a recorded lecture, interview or meeting into something to listen to on the move, saving the soundtrack of your own video for editing, and preparing material for transcription. A spoken-word recording does not need a high bitrate: 96 to 128 kbps is plenty for speech, while music benefits from 192 kbps or more. If the audio will be edited further, keep the highest quality available until the final export, since each lossy re-encode discards a little more detail.
