PDF Repair Tool

Recover PDFs that will not open or that some programs reject. The repair tool checks the file, rebuilds a damaged internal index with qpdf, rewrites every object it can read and verifies the result. You see what was wrong, how many pages were recovered and whether warnings remain – and if a file cannot be repaired, the tool says so instead of pretending.

PDF Repair Tool FAQ

What kinds of damage can be repaired?

Broken or missing cross-reference tables, wrong object offsets, damaged trailers and other structural errors. These are the most common faults after transfers or buggy exports.

What cannot be repaired?

Missing data. If a download stopped halfway, the end of the document does not exist in the file, and no tool can recreate it. Encrypted files need their password.

Will the repaired file look the same?

Yes for every object that could be read. The tool compares page counts and tells you if pages were lost.

Why does my “PDF” fail immediately?

It may not be a PDF at all, for example a web page or Office document saved with a .pdf name. The tool detects common cases.

Is a fresh copy useful even without damage?

Sometimes: a rewritten file can satisfy strict upload portals or programs that dislike a particular structure.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. qpdf and pdf-lib run in your browser.

How PDF repair works

A PDF is a collection of numbered objects – pages, fonts, images – plus a cross-reference table near the end that records where each object starts. Readers use that table to find things. When a file is truncated, edited by faulty software or corrupted in transfer, the table often points to wrong places and readers give up.

The repair runs in two stages in your browser. qpdf, a widely used open-source PDF toolkit, first checks the file, records the problems it detects and rewrites files whose structure is still readable. When the index itself is broken, pdf-lib reads every object in the order it appears in the file, without relying on the damaged table, and writes a new file with a fresh index. The result is then checked again and opened to confirm the repair.

The report is deliberately plain. It lists the problems in the original, the page counts before and after, and any warnings that remain, so you know whether the result is complete. When the damage is beyond recovery, you get an explanation instead of a broken file.

For best results, keep the damaged original: other recovery methods, such as reopening the source document and exporting again, may still work.
