Image Vignette Generator FAQ
What is a vignette?
A gradual darkening or lightening towards the edges and corners of a photo. Old lenses produced it naturally; today it is added on purpose to guide attention towards the centre.
Round or proportional?
Roundness 100 makes a circular vignette based on the shorter side; 0 follows the image’s aspect ratio and becomes an ellipse in wide photos.
How strong should it be?
Subtle vignettes of −20 to −40 are hardly noticed but still guide the eye. Stronger values create a deliberate, stylised look.
Why use a white vignette?
For bright, high-key portraits, wedding photos and product shots on white, a light vignette cleans up the corners and adds an airy feel.
Which formats can I use?
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF (first frame), BMP and AVIF in; JPG, PNG or WebP out. PNG and WebP keep transparency; JPG gets a white background.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The images are processed in your browser and never leave your device.
Using vignettes well
Our eyes are drawn to the brightest and most contrasting part of an image. A vignette uses this by making the edges slightly darker than the centre, so the viewer’s attention settles on the subject. Painters used the same trick long before photography, and most professional photos have a subtle vignette, even if viewers never notice it.
The generator calculates, for every pixel, its distance from the centre relative to the vignette’s size and shape. A smoothstep curve turns this distance into a blending weight that starts at zero inside the clear area and rises gently towards the corners. Because the curve has no hard steps, there are no visible rings, even in smooth skies.
Size moves the start of the effect outwards or inwards. Softness controls the width of the transition: low values give a sharp, spotlight-like border, high values a gentle fall-off over the whole frame. Roundness decides whether the clear area is a circle or follows the frame’s proportions.
Dark vignettes suit moody portraits, night scenes and dramatic landscapes. Light vignettes clean up busy backgrounds and suit high-key photography. Coloured vignettes – a warm brown or a deep blue – add atmosphere and can match a brand or a series.
