Image Fade Generator

Create the soft, nostalgic look of faded film prints and modern matte presets. The fade generator lifts the blacks so shadows turn into soft greys, pulls the whites down slightly, mutes the colours and can tint the shadows with a colour of your choice. A touch of film grain completes the analogue feel. Start from the Matte, Vintage or Cool film presets and fine-tune.

Image Fade Generator FAQ

What does “lifted blacks” mean?

The darkest tones are raised from black to dark grey. In a tone curve this is the left end moving up. It is the main ingredient of the matte look.

Why tint the shadows?

Faded prints often shift towards blue, green or brown in the shadows. Tinting only the dark tones imitates this while keeping highlights clean.

Will the grain look the same in the download?

Yes. The grain is generated from a fixed seed, so the preview and the full-size result use the same pattern.

Can I use it on black-and-white photos?

Yes. Fade and grain work on monochrome images too; a brown shadow tone gives an aged-print look.

Which formats can I use?

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF (first frame), BMP and AVIF in; JPG, PNG or WebP out. PNG and WebP keep transparency; JPG gets a white background.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The images are processed in your browser and never leave your device.

Why faded photos feel nostalgic

Old prints fade in characteristic ways: the darkest tones lose density and turn grey, colours lose saturation, and dyes shift so that shadows take on a cast. We associate this look with memories and the past, which is why faded and matte styles are so popular in photography presets and social media filters.

The fade generator recreates the effect in a few controlled steps. First, colours are moved towards their own luminance to mute them. Then the tonal range is remapped so that black becomes a dark grey and white becomes slightly off-white – the lifted toe and lowered shoulder of a matte tone curve. Finally, a colour is mixed into the darker tones in proportion to their darkness.

Film grain adds texture and hides the smoothness of digital images. It is generated with a fixed seed so that every export looks the same and the preview matches the download.

Subtle settings – a fade of 20 to 40 and little grain – suit most photos. Stronger values create a deliberate retro style for posters, covers and artwork.
