Image Pattern Generator FAQ

What makes a pattern seamless?

The tile is designed so that its edges match: when tiles are placed next to each other, shapes continue across the joins. SVG patterns repeat the tile automatically.

Why download SVG?

SVG is a vector format: it stays sharp at any size, the file is tiny, and you can still change colours in a text or vector editor.

Can I use the SVG as a CSS background?

Yes. Use it with background-image: url(pattern.svg). For a repeating tile in CSS, create a small SVG the size of one tile.

What does thickness change?

The size of dots, the width of stripes and lines, and the height of triangles, depending on the pattern.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Everything is generated and processed in your browser.

Patterns in design

Repeating patterns are among the oldest decorations, from woven textiles to tiled floors. In digital design they add texture and personality to backgrounds without competing with content, and they are an easy way to build a recognisable visual language for a brand or an event.

The generator builds every pattern as an SVG pattern element: a single tile containing a few shapes, repeated across the image by the browser. For stripes, the tile holds one bar; for polka dots, one circle; for checks, two squares; for hexagons, five overlapping outlines that together tessellate. Because the tile is defined in vector form, the pattern is perfectly sharp at any size.

The tile size and thickness are measured on the final image, so a 40-pixel tile in a 1920-pixel banner looks the same as in the preview, which is scaled to fit your screen. Rotation turns the whole pattern around its origin, turning stripes into diagonals or a grid into a diamond lattice.

For raster downloads, the same SVG is rendered at the chosen size, so PNG and SVG always match. JPG gets a solid background; choose PNG or WebP if you need transparency.

Colours with good contrast make bold patterns; colours close to each other create subtle textures that work well behind text.
