HEIC to JPG FAQ
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the file type Apple devices use for photos by default since iOS 11. It is based on the HEIF standard and stores a picture in roughly half the space of a JPG.
Are my photos uploaded to convert them?
No. The decoder runs inside your browser, so the photos never leave your device.
Why is conversion slower than for other formats?
Most browsers cannot read HEIC natively, so the tool uses a software decoder. A 12-megapixel photo usually takes two to five seconds.
Is the photo's date and location kept?
No. The converted file contains the image only. EXIF data such as capture time and GPS position is not copied across.
Can I stop my iPhone creating HEIC files?
Yes. Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible, and new photos will be saved as JPG. Alternatively, Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic converts photos when you export them by cable.
Does it handle Live Photos or bursts?
For files that contain several images, the primary still image is converted.
Why iPhones use HEIC
HEIF, the High Efficiency Image File Format, stores images compressed with the HEVC video codec. Apple adopted it in 2017 because it roughly halves the storage a photo needs compared with JPG at the same quality, and it can hold extras such as depth maps, Live Photo frames and 10-bit colour in one file.
The drawback is licensing: HEVC is covered by patents, so many platforms have been slow to support HEIC or do not support it at all. That is why a photo that looks fine on your phone can fail to open on a work PC or be refused by an upload form. JPG has no such restrictions and is readable everywhere, which makes it the safe format for sharing.
