Add Watermark to Video FAQ
What logo format is best?
A PNG with a transparent background, so only the logo shape appears. A JPG logo shows its rectangular background.
What opacity should I use?
Around 50–80% is visible but not distracting. Lower values are subtle; 100% is best for small, simple logos.
Can I add text instead of a logo?
Use Add Text to Video for text watermarks, names or captions.
Does the watermark stop people copying my video?
It does not prevent copying, but it makes the source obvious and discourages reuploads without credit. A watermark in a corner can be cropped out; a larger, more central one is harder to remove.
Is the audio kept?
Yes. The audio track is kept and converted to AAC.
Watermarking video effectively
Video spreads quickly once posted: clips are downloaded, reuploaded and shared far from their original page. A visible logo travels with every copy, so viewers know where it came from even when the post credits no one. For brands it doubles as repeated, low-key exposure.
The usual placement is a corner, most often the bottom right, where it is visible without covering the action. Be aware that players and platforms overlay controls, captions and buttons on video edges, especially at the bottom and on the right in vertical apps. A margin of a few per cent keeps the logo clear of them.
Opacity is a balance. A fully opaque logo is crisp and recognisable but more distracting; a semi-transparent one blends in yet stays legible on most footage. Simple, bold logo marks work better than detailed wordmarks, which become unreadable at watermark sizes.
Technically, the logo is overlaid on every frame with FFmpeg’s overlay filter after scaling it and applying the chosen transparency. The result is encoded as a standard H.264 MP4, so the watermark is part of the picture and cannot be switched off by a player.
