The seven-day week

The seven-day week is the one unit of time not tied to the movement of the sun, moon or earth: it comes from tradition, and it has been remarkably stable. Because a week is always exactly seven days, converting between them is simple multiplication and division.

The interesting part is the remainder. Durations in days are often easiest to understand as weeks plus days, such as 45 days as 6 weeks and 3 days. Medicine, construction schedules and legal notice periods all use that form, which is why the converter shows it next to the decimal result.

Weeks do not divide evenly into months or years. A year is 52 weeks and one or two days, and a month is about 4.35 weeks. Periods stated in months should be converted with a calendar, which the Months to Days Calculator does.

Be careful with working weeks. “Two weeks’ notice” usually means fourteen calendar days, but “ten working days” excludes weekends. When the distinction matters, check the definition in the relevant contract or rule.
