Days to Hours Converter FAQ

How many hours are in a day?

Twenty-four. Multiply days by 24 to get hours; divide hours by 24 to get days.

How many hours are in a week?

168 hours (7 × 24).

How many hours are in a year?

8,760 in a common year of 365 days and 8,784 in a leap year.

What about working days?

A working day is often counted as 8 hours, not 24. Divide working hours by 8 for working days; this converter uses calendar days.

Does daylight saving change the result?

For unit conversion a day is 24 hours. A particular calendar day on which clocks change has 23 or 25 hours.

How do I enter half a day?

Type 0.5, 1/2 or 0:12.

Days, hours and working days

A calendar day has twenty-four hours, so converting days to hours is a multiplication by 24 and the reverse a division. Fractions of a day convert cleanly in quarters: six hours is a quarter day, twelve hours a half.

Confusion arises when different kinds of “day” are mixed. A project estimate of three days usually means three working days of seven or eight hours each, not 72 hours. Service-level agreements, by contrast, often count calendar hours. Be explicit about which you mean when converting estimates.

Large numbers of hours are easier to grasp as weeks and days. 1,000 hours is 5 weeks, 6 days and 16 hours, which says more than the bare figure. The breakdown in this converter is always shown alongside the main result.

For conversion purposes every day has exactly 24 hours. Real calendar days can be 23 or 25 hours long where clocks change for daylight saving. When the exact elapsed time between two moments matters, use dates and times rather than a unit conversion.
