Image Cartoon Effect
Turn photos into cartoon-style images. The cartoon effect smooths skin, sky and surfaces while keeping edges crisp, reduces the colours to flat steps like a hand-coloured illustration, and draws dark outlines along strong edges. Three sliders control how smooth, how flat and how outlined the result is, and you can apply the look to many photos at once.

Image Cartoon Effect FAQ
How does the effect work?
Three classic steps: a guided filter flattens textures while keeping edges, the colours are quantised into flat steps, and a Sobel edge map adds dark outlines.
Is it an AI cartoon filter?
No. It is a deterministic image filter that runs in your browser. AI filters redraw faces in a particular art style; this effect keeps the photo’s shapes exactly.
Which photos work best?
Portraits, pets and objects with clear shapes and even light. Very busy scenes produce many outlines; lower the outline slider.
Why are there too many lines?
Texture produces edges too. Lower the outline slider or raise smoothness.
Which formats can I use?
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF (first frame), BMP and AVIF in; JPG, PNG or WebP out. PNG and WebP keep transparency; JPG gets a white background.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The images are processed in your browser and never leave your device.
Cartoon images from photos
Cartoons and comics simplify the world: large areas of flat colour, a few shading steps and clear black outlines. The cartoon effect imitates this by removing the fine detail of a photo, flattening its colours and adding outlines where the shapes meet.
Simplification starts with an edge-preserving filter. A normal blur would wash out the shapes along with the texture; the guided filter smooths only within regions of similar colour and stops at strong edges. Applied twice with a large radius, it turns skin, walls and sky into smooth surfaces while faces and objects keep their contours.
Next, each colour channel is reduced to a few steps, which gives the flat, banded colouring typical of illustrations. A small share of the smooth original is mixed back in to avoid harsh posterisation in gradients like skies.
Finally, the brightness is slightly blurred and the Sobel operator finds the strongest edges. Pixels on those edges are darkened, producing ink-like outlines. The outline slider controls how many edges qualify.
For the most convincing results, start with a sharp, well-lit photo and crop it to the subject first. Strong outlines suit bold, colourful images; for a softer watercolour feel, lower the outlines and raise the smoothness.
