Tip Calculator FAQ
How much should I tip?
It depends on the country. In the United States 15–20% is customary in restaurants; in much of Europe rounding up or 5–10% is usual; in Japan tipping is not expected. In many countries a service charge is already included in the bill.
Should the tip be on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides commonly suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total. Enter the tax to see the pre-tax version.
What if the bill includes a service charge?
Then a tip is usually not expected, or only a small extra for exceptional service. Check the bill before adding a tip.
How does rounding up work?
Each person’s share is rounded up to the next whole currency unit, so the group pays a little more. The calculator shows the resulting total and the effective tip percentage.
Can I split unequal shares?
This tool splits evenly. For unequal orders, calculate each person’s items separately and apply the tip percentage to each.

The arithmetic of tipping
Tipping is simple arithmetic made awkward by a menu of percentages, a tired group and a phone calculator. The tip is the bill multiplied by the chosen percentage; the total is the bill plus the tip; each person’s share is the total divided by the number of people. This tool does the three steps and shows them.
The base of the tip is a matter of custom. Some people tip on the full bill, others on the amount before tax, which is the guidance of many etiquette writers in countries where tax is added at the end. Entering the tax lets you see both and choose.
Rounding is the other practical detail. Splitting a bill evenly produces awkward shares, and groups often round each share up to make paying in cash or by transfer easier. Rounding up increases the tip slightly; the calculator tells you by how much, so nobody is surprised.
Tipping customs differ widely around the world. In some countries a tip is a significant part of a worker’s income; in others a service charge is included or tipping is uncommon. When travelling, check the local custom, and always read the bill for an existing service charge before adding a tip.
